NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY -- A Passionate Film for February
Posted by: AnnaB on Feb 1, 2010
I am proud to help celebrate the beautiful and powerful film, NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY, as the DVD Club Official Selection for January and February.
It's exciting to get behind a film made by a new filmmaker, writier/director Charles Officer. It was created at the Canadian Film Centre as Charles' graduate feature film, and it's great to see how well it was received. It was the buzz of TIFF 2008 and a hit with audiences and critics alike.
For both producer/writer Ingrid Veninger and Charles, it was a passion project. The writing is brave and deeply personal, and they worked together developing the script over a long period. One of the themes that jumped out at me is bravery -- each of the characters are asked to stretch their courage while facing enormous personal hurdles.
I watched the film for the third time recently, and was struck again by the strong performances. Clark Johnson worked well below his usual "The Wire" pay day and it sounds like he devoted himself to the production as a mentor. Karen LeBlanc is incredible as the strong and tough nurse. The chemistry between Karen and Clark is intense.
It was shot in about three weeks in Toronto and I love how the film it depicts the back alleys of my city, capturing the subtle beauty of late summer.
The incredible soundtrack throbs at the heart of the film, deepening the lyricism of each scene. The pace is slow and dreamy, allowing you time to sink into each moment.
Charles and Ingrid are both online to answer your questions and discuss this film -- check out the Forum at www.firstweekendclub.ca/forum
