"A Must-See Film For Serious Music Fans." -Variety
"...an articulate and emotional oral history of an entire life." -EYE Weekly
"...the most complete portrait yet of this complex artist." - The Toronto Star
Geniuses come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. One of them is undeniably Toronto-born Glenn Gould - a child prodigy that grew up to became one of the most influential pianists in the world of classical music. Michèle Hozer and Peter Raymont's documentary "Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould" paints an intimate and piercing portrait of the man behind the myth.
Deeply eccentric, charming and quirky, Gould is clearly a captivating and mysterious persona. Revered for his unorthodox musical interpretations (particularly of Bach's compositions), vivid musical imagination and mannerisms at the keyboard, Gould was also known for his eccentric behavior away from the keyboard. His very own life, as one person describes it was "a performance that people [could] not take their eyes off of".
"Genius Within" features never-before seen footage of Gould, photographs and excerpts from his private home recordings and diaries, along with personal recollections from Gould's most intimate friends and lovers, taking us deep into the world of this genius and Canadian legend.
"I'm very much the anti-hero in real life," said Gould once, "but I compensate madly in my dreams."
