Over my years with First Weekend Club I’ve had the pleasure to speak with many talented Canadian filmmakers and actors. As we celebrate Canada Day and the 150th birthday of this great country I wanted to share some of my favourite interviews. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
I got to live out my very own teenage dream when I spoke with Jason Priestley a few years ago. His reputation as the nicest person in the business is well-earned and he made my year in those few minutes! If my teenage self knew that one day she would get to meet Brandon Walsh she probably would have fainted. Let me tell you, it was an incredible moment.
Tatiana Maslany is perhaps our biggest, brightest talent on the world stage at the moment. It was super cool for me to guest start on Orphan Black as Meera Kumar in the first season and even more fun to speak with this awesome lady on the red carpet for the Birk’s/Telefilm event honouring women in Canadian film.
Zoie Palmer has mad fans and it’s easy to see why. My interview with her was one of my first with FWC and it was intimidating for sure but she made it so playful–as you’ll see when I try to do my best British accent. Hey, I had to try!
Probably the most nerve-wracking interview I’ve done is with father-son team, Eugene and Dan Levy. It was at the Toronto Screenwriting Conference a couple of years back and I thought I’d have at most 5mins with them but this it turned out to be such an easy-flowing conversation that lasted 13mins! You can’t get more Canadian than these two.
Seeing as our mandate is to promote Canadian film and talent, it’s not often that we get to speak with Amercian stars. My big star-struck interview was with Ethan Hawke who was so gracious with me, and so fantastic as Chet Baker in Born to Be Blue.
Another pseudo-Hollywood moment was with the lovely Sandra Oh. It was ever-so-brief but she showed that you can take the girl outta Canada but you can’t take Canada outta the girl!
We are all about girl power here at FWC and this interview with the team from Tru Love was the epitome of that! Such a great chat surrounded by amazingly talented ladies.
We all love Ennis Esmer, I mean he’s hilarious and in high demand. So did he really need to make a bid for my job? See for yourself…he’d be quite good at it I’m sure!
And last but certainly not least, is the interview I co-hosted with our fearless leader, Anita Adams. I’ve often interviewed more than one person at a time but this was the only time I’ve ever shared interviewing duties and it was pretty hilarious to watch us fight over the very handsome Charles Officer! He was a pretty good sport about it.
Here’s to you Canada, and all the fabulous memories you’ve given me as part of the First Weekend Club team.
